MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.–The Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association has announced the Scholar Athlete awards for the 2017 season. Minnesota had eight Gophers receive the award, the second most in the entire MCLA behind Cal-Berkeley who had 9 recipients. The Scholar Athlete recognizes student-athletes who have maintained at least a cumulative 3.20 GPA and have also been named to an All-Conference team.
Gophers who have earned the award are:
Niklas Damberg
Nick Fix
Matthew Johnson
Matt Jorgensen
Teddy Moeller
Nathan Monsein
Dillon Ptacek
Trenton Woodcock
This is the third Scholar Athlete award received by Damberg, Jorgensen, and Woodcock. The only other Minnesota player to have received the award three times was Ben Nash (’13, ’14, ’15). Jorgensen graduated last spring with a degree in microbiology and history with plans to attend medical school next year. Damberg and Woodcock, both seniors this year, will be graduating this upcoming spring. Damberg is majoring in biology, and Woodcock is majoring in mechanical engineering.
Fix and Moeller have received their second Scholar Athlete award in their careers. Johnson, Monsein, and Ptacek have all received the award for the first time. Fix graduated with a degree in computer science, and is now living in San Fransisco, Calif. where he works for Intuit as a software engineer. Ptacek graduated with a degree in Kinesiology, while Monsein will graduate this fall with a degree in biochemistry and pursue a career in healthcare. Both Johnson and Moeller will be completing their business marketing education degrees this spring.
