Rookie Spotlight: Casey Chiodo



MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.–This year, the Gophers have made numerous significant additions to the team. Leading up to the 2018 season opener, we will feature each newcomer in our Rookie Spotlight. Today, we feature Monticello native, Casey Chiodo.

Chiodo, a three year starter and two time captain, was a 2-time All-Conference and 2-time 2nd team All-Section selection while playing for Monticello High School. The attackman led Monticello in goals and assists his junior year (45g, 12a) as well as his senior year (47g, 31a). He ended his senior year regular season ranked 3rd in the state in points. He was also nominated for mnlaxhub’s player of the week after his 9 point (7g, 2a) performance against Buffalo High School for the week of April 17–21. Chiodo is the leading scorer in Monticello lacrosse history with a career total of 102 goals and 53 assists.

A three–sport athlete, Chiodo also played football and hockey for Monticello. As a junior, he was an All-Conference Honorable Mention selection in both hockey and football. His senior year, he was a first team All-Conference selection in both hockey and football. Chiodo was also voted by his football coaches and teammates as Defensive Player of the Year (70 tackles, 4 int) and was recognized by the Mississippi 8 conference as Defensive Back of the Year. Additionally, he was nominated for All-Metro athlete for his performance on both sides of the ball. While playing hockey, Chiodo recorded 23 goals and 13 assists in 30 games played during his senior season, helping his team to its first appearance in the Minnesota State High School Hockey Tournament. Chiodo and his team won their way into the Class A state championship game where they were defeated by Hermantown in double overtime, 4-3.

Casey’s parents Ronald and Toni were both student athletes while attending NDSU. His dad was a defensive end on the football team, and his mother was a hurdler on the track team. Casey’s uncle Wade and his grandfather Glenn both played college hockey at Bemidji State University. Casey’s brother Charlie is currently 6 years old and enjoys playing soccer, basketball, and lacrosse.


What led you to decide to choose the University of Minnesota?

The combination of academics, location, and campus atmosphere was hard to pass up.

What do you plan on majoring in?

I plan on majoring in Finance with minors in both Mathematics and Leadership because they all lie within my interests and strengths, and I believe they will put me in a great position for a successful future.

What are you most looking forward to this season?

Being able to play my favorite sport with my favorite people

Bucca Di Beppo

The Shawshank Redemption

Favorite hobby (outside of lacrosse)?

Listening to music and playing video games

If you could be any superhero, which one would you be?

Professor X because mind control would be very fun

If you had to live in another country for 2 years, where would you choose?

New Zealand because its beautiful and I could become an avid rugby fan.
