Rookie Spotlight: Malik Ekpenyong



MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.–Malik Ekpenyong is one of the numerous transfers that highlight this year's newcomers. Ekpenyong was a 2015 MSHSL All tournament team selection at Bloomington Jefferson High School where he finished with 35 goals and 8 assists as a senior captain. The Bloomington, Minnesota native played and started all four seasons on the Jefferson varsity team where he was a four–time All-Section and three–time All-Conference pick. Ekpenyong also played basketball for a year at Bloomington Jefferson. After graduating high school, Ekpenyong attended and played lacrosse at the United States Air Force Academy (NCAA Division I) where they won the Southern Conference championship and then losing in the first round of the 2016 NCAA lacrosse championships to Notre Dame. He finished the year earning two starts putting up 1 goal and 0 assists.

Malik is the son of Asuquo Ekpenyong and Nsi Ikott. He has two younger siblings, Malia and Mya.


What led you to decide attending Minnesota?

I decided attending the U of M, because of the great academics that the school has to offer. The big school atmosphere was very appealing to me. The U is also decently close to home which makes it easier to spend time with my family.

What do you plan on majoring/studying?

BS Economics. Economics is a very broad major with various opportunities to capitalize on after graduation.

What are you most looking forward to this season?

Winning the CCLA championship as well as going on to Nationals

Chipotle

Favorite hobby (outside of lacrosse)?

Playing pickup basketball

If you could be any superhero, which one would you be?

I would be the flash because he is extremely fast and shifty.

If you had to live in another country for 2 years, where would you choose?

I would want to live in Norway because it just seems chill.

Which of your teammates would you choose to take on the coaching staff in a game of basketball? (Team of 8)

I would take Kamal Baker, Phil Wagner, Carter Kasianov, Garrett Lieb, Drew Bianchini, Jeff Watkins, Aaron Peterson, and Luke Martin for morale. I would predict the score to be 51-50 on a last second 3 point buzzer beater by Jeff Watkins.

What is something you can beat all of your teammates in?

I could beat all of my teammates in NBA 2k. I NEVER lose.
